Classical Vedic astrology treats planetary friendships as fixed: certain planets are always considered natural friends, others natural enemies, based on their inherent qualities. Lal Kitab — a distinct, remedy-focused branch of astrology — takes a more situational view, and the concept of Bilmukabil Grah ("planets facing each other") is one of its more interesting departures from the classical system.

The core idea

In Lal Kitab, whether two planets act as friends or enemies in your specific chart depends heavily on which houses they occupy relative to each other — not just their fixed classical relationship. Two planets that are natural friends everywhere else can behave like adversaries if they end up positioned opposite each other, or in a tense relationship of houses, in a particular birth chart. The reverse also holds: naturally "unfriendly" planets can support each other well if their house placement favours cooperation.

Why this matters practically

This is Lal Kitab's explanation for something classical predictions sometimes miss: why two areas of life that "should" support each other, based on the planets involved, instead seem to work against one another for a specific person. A relationship that turns unexpectedly difficult, a partnership that sours, a skill that should help a career but somehow doesn't — Bilmukabil Grah offers a chart-specific reason, rather than a generic one.

How it's read

The practitioner looks at where each planet sits, house by house, and evaluates the relationship between those specific positions — effectively asking "given where these two are actually standing in this chart, are they working with or against each other?" rather than relying on their textbook friendship status. This is also why Lal Kitab remedies tend to be practical and behavioural (specific actions, donations, or habits) rather than purely symbolic — the system is built around addressing the actual configuration in front of it, not a generic planetary trait.

The broader takeaway

Bilmukabil Grah is a good example of why a chart reading benefits from more than one lens. Classical astrology explains a planet's general nature; Lal Kitab asks how that planet is actually behaving in this specific chart, based on its real neighbours. Neither view replaces the other — together, they explain more of what shows up in someone's life than either one does alone.
